How to Choose Examination Gloves for Different Tasks

Start With the Job Before Selecting the Material

Before comparing nitrile, latex and vinyl gloves, first find out what staff will be doing.

Will they be exposed to blood, body fluids or mucous membranes? Do you use sterile gloves for the procedure? Are they going to use cleaning chemicals, laboratory reagents or hazardous medicines?

These questions help differentiate between routine examination gloves and products that provide more specialised protection. The CDC guidance for glove selection for nonsurgical use emphasises the importance of task, chemical exposure, latex sensitivity, and sizing.

Nitrile, Latex and Vinyl Exam Gloves: What’s the Difference?

Material is an important selection factor but should be considered in conjunction with the intended use of the finished product and performance documentation.

Examination gloves - Nitrile

Nitrile is a man-made substitute for natural rubber latex. Medical-grade nitrile examination gloves are another option when natural rubber latex must be avoided.

But the word “nitrile” isn’t the be-all and end-all of suitability for every job. Routine examination gloves should not be assumed to be chemical- resistant or chemotherapy-tested gloves. Verify the specific product’s documented protection for the intended exposure.

Examination gloves: latex

A second option for clinical tasks is natural rubber latex gloves, if allowed by facility policy and suitable for both wearer and patient.

The main problem is sensitivity to latex. Select an appropriate synthetic substitute if the healthcare worker or patient is allergic to natural rubber latex. Even powder-free latex gloves contain natural rubber latex; it’s the latex, not the powder.

Vinyl gloves for examination

Vinyl is also a synthetic material, but I don’t think that it will perform equally for every clinical activity.

CDC reports higher failure rates of vinyl gloves compared to latex or nitrile in simulated and actual clinical conditions. Its guidance thus favours latex or nitrile gloves for procedures that require manual dexterity or more than brief patient contact.

Know When Gloves Are Not Enough

A common mistake in buying is to buy all disposable gloves as if they were all the same.

Examination gloves (nonsterile) are designed for suitable nonsurgical procedures. They do not change sterile surgical gloves when the procedure requires sterile surgical gloves.

Likewise, a label for a medical examination does not itself afford protection against all disinfectants, laboratory chemicals or hazardous drugs. For those tasks, ask for product-specific test information, and refer to the required glove type, thickness and change schedule.

Protective utility gloves may be needed when cleaning contaminated equipment. The choice should be based on both injury risks and chemical exposure.

“Powder-Free” Doesn’t Mean Allergy-Free

Exam gloves without powder are an important factor when you purchase. The FDA has banned powdered medical gloves in the United States because of the serious health hazards associated with glove powder. That’s the position of U.S. regulators, and buyers in other countries should also check local requirements.

Request quotations separately for the two requirements, where applicable. In the event of irritation or any suspected reaction, the wearer should be appropriately assessed and glove selection reviewed rather than assuming a different powder-free product will be the answer.

Why Elumia Med Store?

For healthcare buyers, glove buying is best when product selection and stock planning are in alignment. Elumia Med Store provides advice on the selection of disposable gloves and the procurement of medical gloves, including material comparisons and stock considerations.

When asking, include the needed material and sizes, powder condition, tasks and estimated monthly volumes. Please get the relevant product documentation and check current availability before approving the order.

This gives your team a better basis for comparing options and helps you to avoid ordering by price or product image alone.

Closing Remarks

Proper examination gloves satisfy the task, exposure risk, wearer and procedure requirements. Nitrile, latex and vinyl should be considered on those merits rather than as interchangeable products.

Approved spec. Check the fit with your team. Plan stock by size. A well-thought-out procurement process will help in the availability of appropriate gloves and reduce unnecessary wastage and errors in selection.
