IV Administration Sets – What Are They?

An IV administration set is a set of tubing and accessories used to administer prescribed fluids or medications from a container into a patient’s intravenous access system.

Depending on the design, a set may include a container spike, a drip chamber, a clamp, access ports, connectors and an inline filter.

Configuration is product-specific. Dedicated pump sets and blood administration sets are not interchangeable with standard gravity sets.

Drop Factor (Microdrip and Macrodrip)

The drop factor is the number of drops that constitute one millilitre of fluid under the set’s stated conditions. Products are available with factors of 10, 15, 20 or 60 drops per millilitre.

Microdrip is usually used for 60 drop sets. For procurement, write down the exact labelled value, and not just "macrodrip" or "microdrip".

Also distinguish between microdrip and microbore. The drop factor is microdrip, and the internal diameter of the tubing is microbore.

Vented or non-vented

The venting requirements are fluid container- and set design-dependent. Verify that the product is compatible with your facility’s bags or bottles.

If a set has an adjustable vent, staff should refer to the instructions for that particular container. Don't assume every vented set is used the same way.

Priming volume and tube material

There are PVC and non-PVC tubing options available from manufacturers, including those that are designed to be compatible with specific medications. The tubing diameter also affects the priming volume and flow properties.

Confirm required material, internal volume and length with the clinical team. DEHP-free and PVC-free are different attributes and should be checked separately.

"Filters, Ports and Connectors"

Note if the set requires an in-line filter, needle-free access ports, specific valves or a specified connector.

For filtered sets, note the required filter type and pore size. Filters are not universal upgrades; they have different purposes.

Concluding Thoughts

When selecting IV administration sets, you need to know what therapy you are trying to give, how you are going to give it and whether it is compatible with the product.

Compare exact specs before considering price or bulk purchases. An established purchasing checklist that you document helps your team order uniformly and identify substitutions that are not appropriate before they reach the treatment room.
